Dec 6, 2013 “Apple, Amazon and now Google: It’s a pretty exciting day for robotics!”

There is serious momentum in robotics these days, evidenced by recent news from Apple, Amazon and Google:

Apple announced that they were investing $10.5 billion in supply chain robots and automation equipment and recently confirmed their acquisition of PrimeSense for $350 million (PrimeSense is the developer of the Kinnect 3D system used by MS Xbox)..
Amazon, in a CBS 60 Minutes piece aired last Sunday, displayed a new concept delivery system using an octocopter. Remember that in 2012 Amazon spent $750 million to acquire Kiva Systems, the robot technology enabling robotically-delivered goods to a picker/packer.
And now Google has set up a robotics division headed by the man behind the Android operating system, Andy Rubin. In Rubin’s first six months he has acquired seven robotic companies to jump start his new operation.

Dec 6, 2013 “Google makes big robotics investment”

In a revealing NY Times interview with Google’s Andy Rubin, some heretofor unknown things came to light. Google is now in the robotics business. They’ve made seven acquisitions in the last six months to give them some talent and a head start. And they are as closed mouth about their plans for their new robotics division as Google has been about everything else.

The management research firm McKinsey & Company has recently released a report on how 12 identified disruptive technologies may shape our future. According the report authors,it is critical that business and policy leaders understand which technologies will matter to them and prepare accordingly.

April 22, 2012 – “Two More Robotics Companies Get Acquired: My Robot Nation and Sensable Technologies “

It seems like robotics companies are being acquired left-and-right.  Just the other week we learned of two more: (1) My Robot Nation, which allows you to design and 3D print custom robot figurines, was acquired by 3D systems.  (2) Sensable Technologies, which is best-known in robotics circles for their “Phantom Omni” haptic interfaces (eg. for teleoperation), was just acquired by Geomagic.  While the acquisition prices were undisclosed, it’s likely that they were smaller than the mega-acquisitions of Kiva Systems by Amazon for $775 Million and Aldebaran Robotics by Softbank for $100 Million.  Either way, these recent acquisitions seem to indicate a growing trend in the robotics industry.

Willow Garage has announced the Open Source Robotics Foundation, which will sponsor the development of ROS and Gazebo and aims to generally “support the development, distribution, and adoption of open source software for use in robotics research, education, and product development.” Read more >>

March 19, 2012 – “Amazon.com to Acquire Manufacturer of Robotics”

Amazon.com is buying an army of robots. The online retailer announced that it is acquiring Kiva Systems, a maker of robots that service warehouses, for $775 million in cash. Amazon, a  customer of Kiva’s, is buying the robotics company as it builds out its vast network of warehouses and tries to improve its margins
